No Bones About It . . .
As a lover of mysteries and crime drama, it is natural that I enjoy the show Bones. Well now I have another reason to like the show: it's star, Emily Deschanel (who plays Dr. Temperance Brennan) is not only "green," but a vegan activist as well.
"There is no such thing as a meat-eating environmentalist. Now-a-days being green is very fashionable — especially in Hollywood. While I think it is terrific to recycle and drive a hybrid, you can have an even greater impact on the environment by making one simple choice: don’t eat meat."
She has been a vegan since she was 15, influenced by John Robbins Diet for a New America. Since then, she has been outspoken for the causes of the environment, veganism, and animal rights. She is a member of PETA and works with the Humane Society and with the Farm Sanctuary. She lends her fame to causes, donates money and time, writes letters to government representatives, and lives her life as an example of compassion.
To keep fit and healthy, she also enjoys yoga, the treadmill, and bicycling. Although she usually eats fruits and veggies, she sometimes enjoys meat substitutes: "I do eat some meat alternatives. I love Gardein. You can only get it at Whole Foods. It's very tasty."
In the video, Emily states: “I think the number one way I’m green is I’m vegan. A lot of people don’t realize the impact of the meat and dairy industry on the environment. So I have no animal products. I don’t wear leather --which is tanned and they use horrible chemicals. My house: I’ve put in double-pained windows, hope to do solar panels and get a compost pile — our house is kind of crazy right now.”
