WOODY HARRELSON turned vegan in his 20s after a stranger promised him it would cure his chronic acne - and he credits the decision with turning his life around.
The actor claims a meat and dairy diet ruined his skin and left him lethargic and sluggish. Harrelson has been a vegan for over 20 years, and now only eats a raw foods diet.
"It's been at least 20 years. I used to eat burgers and steak, and I would just be knocked out afterward; I had to give it up."
"The first thing was dairy. I was about 24 years old and I had tons of acne and mucus. I met some random girl on a bus who told me to quit dairy and all those symptoms would go away three days later. By God she was right."
Woody Harrelson wouldn't make a good zombie. He's a vegan, after all, and won't eat a hamburger, let alone his neighbor!
So it's a good thing that in the new film Zombieland (2009) he doesn't play a zombie. Even so, his eating habits had to be taken into consideration while filming the movie, as Harrelson plays a zombie hunter addicted to Twinkies.
"My character is searching for the ultimate comfort food, which to him is not another human being but a Twinkie," says Harrelson. "I'm not a Twinkie lover. I don't do sugar or dairy either."
So, if Harrelson were looking for comfort food while the world was coming to an end, what would it be?
"I'd be searching for a mango," he said. "Or an avocado. It really is a tough call between the two."
So what happened in the Twinkie scene?
"When we finally shot my Twinkie-eating scene in the movie, they had to give me a specially made mock Twinkie..."
Zombieland Twinkies were made from cornmeal and other vegan ingredients. This leads Woody to believe companies really can make healthy junk food if they put their mind to it.
“They were actually edible for a guy like me,” Woody said.
Can a zombie movie change the food industry?
“There’s a possibility that (manufacturer) Hostess could do a healthy Twinkie. It’s a thought.”
--"It could spur a healthy Twinkie revolution."
